Obituary

Mr. Waymer C. Messick, 85, of Opp, Alabama died Tuesday, June 8, 2021 in a Dothan hospital.

Waymer was born February 12, 1936 to his late parents, Rosa Lee and Herman Messick at Pine Level, Alabama. The youngest of 9 children, Waymer graduated from Opp High School in 1954 and soon after moved to Pensacola, Florida to work for Chemstrand.

On June 11, 1955, Waymer married Martha Ramer Messick, also from Opp. Their marriage ended after 55 years but they remained friends until his death. Waymer is survived by his only child, Angie Messick; numerous nieces & nephews including Dennis Messick, Bob Messick, Jeanette Barkley, Sam Messick, Linda Andrews, Lurlene McCullough, Mitch Blair, and Patti Spann; and former sister-in-law, Laurette Dyess.

Waymer retired as Wastewater Maintenance Department supervisor from the City of Pensacola in 1996 but remained very active until well in to his 70's building two more homes, managing a trailer park, establishing a tree farm and building a farm pond. He was a hard worker and happiest when planning or executing a project.

In the last ten years of his life, Waymer was a member of Westview Baptist Church in Opp. His church family was a blessing to him, and provided the love and stability he needed as his dementia worsened. A special thanks to his pastor, Gary Miller, and friend in Christ, Tracy Weaver. Your many phone calls, prayers and visits meant so much to the family.

A big thank you to Amber at Southern Care Hospice and the staff at Madison Heights memory care in Enterprise. Your loving care and guidance was so helpful while navigating this challenging path.
