Obituary

Peggy Sherrel (Johnson) Hudson, age 85, of Montgomery, Alabama (formerly of Opp), went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 7, 2026.

Born on March 26, 1941, in Opp, Alabama, Peggy was the daughter of Odis and Maudie (Creech) Johnson. She grew up in Opp and went straight from school to work at the local cotton mill, later earning her GED. In 1979, she began a long and dedicated career as a civil servant with the Registrar’s Office at the Air Force War College on Maxell Air Force Base in Montgomery, where she retired after 32 years of faithful service.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Odis and Maudie (Creech) Johnson; brothers, Charles and Bobby Johnson; and sisters, Mary Emily (Tim) Courson, Betty Battle, and Margaret Ann Crumpton. She is survived by her brothers, Harry and Jim Johnson; sister, Pat Hodge; daughter, Pamela Weaver & son-in-law, Jim; son, Anthony Hudson & daughter-in-law, Janet; granddaughters, Michelle Zuniga (Daniel), Ansley Peede (Connor), Alison Peede (Thomas), and Jessica Brown (Mike); and great-grandchildren, Zoe, Hailey, Natalie, Daniel, and Presley Zuniga; Layton and Lylah Peede; and Georgia, Cooper, Duke, and Magnolia Peede.

Peggy’s greatest joy was her family. She never remarried after her divorce in 1979, choosing instead to pour her love into her children, grandchildren, and the extended family members and friends who passed through her door. She was known for speaking her mind – always in the most loving (and occasionally very direct) way – and for living by a simple rule: if you needed help, her home was open. Almost every niece and nephew, and even her son’s friends, knew they could find a hot meal, a place to stay, and a set of ”house rules” at Peggy’s. She never met a stranger and treated everyone with the same Southern kindness and warmth.

In her free time, Peggy loved playing bingo and card games with her friends, tending her garden, working crossword puzzles, and cheering on her beloved Alabama Crimson Tide. She was quick with a smile, quicker with a hug, and always ready with a plate of home cooking that could make anyone feel right at home.

Funeral services for Peggy Sherrel (Johnson) Hudson will be held at 10:30 am Friday, May 15, 2026 from Wyatt Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Brooklyn Cemetery. Visitation for immediate family will begin at 9:00 am with visitation for friends at 9:30 am. Bro. Bobby Morgan will be officiating. A luncheon will be held at noon Friday at Sweetwater Baptist Church, also in Opp.

Peggy lived a full life marked by hard work, fierce love, and open-hearted generosity. She leaves behind a legacy of family, faith, and the kind of Southern hospitality that turned strangers into friends and houses into homes filled with laughter. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit – and probably a few of her best recipes – will live on in all who knew and loved her.
