Mrs. Mabel Wright Gibson, age 94, of Opp, Alabama passed away Monday, November 2, 2026 at her home.

When the people of Opp hear the name “Piggly Wiggly” they immediately think of Mabel Gibson, as they should, she worked there from the time she was sixteen. Mabel enjoyed going to work, managing employees and most importantly, visiting with her customers. She also enjoyed playing golf with the ladies at the Opp Country Club and riding through the streets to see what everyone had going on. 

First Baptist Church of Opp was a big part of Mabel’s life. She was a member of First Baptist for seventy-three years and enjoyed worshiping and serving alongside her fellow members, especially in her later years.

Mrs. Gibson is survived by her daughter, Kathy Gibson Cotton; son, Jon Gibson; grandchildren, Kelsey Cotton Hamrick & husband, Mitch, Daniel Cotton and David Cotton; great-grandchildren, Damian Hamrick and Vincent Hamrick; and sister, Myrtle Floyd. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rodney Gibson; parents, Myrtle Plant Wright and Claude Gantt Wright; and brothers, Roy Wright and Claude S. Wright.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mabel Wright Gibson will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, November 7, 2026 from Wyatt Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Opp City Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Bro. Chris Weide and Rev. Wayne Sharpe will be officiating.
