Obituary

Jean Spurlin Everage, age 95, was born on August 30, 1931, and peacefully entered her heavenly home on October 13, 2026, at 4:35 a.m., surrounded by the love of the family she treasured so dearly.

Jean was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. To her family, she was lovingly known as “Granny Jean.”

Her life was defined by faith, family, love, and devotion. She loved the Lord and held firmly to her faith throughout her 95 years. Even in her weakest moments, she wanted to praise the Lord and listen to the old hymns and songs of faith she loved so much—what she affectionately called “an oldie but a goodie.”

Jean was a faithful member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church for more than 65 years. Her church was an important part of her life and her walk with the Lord. She faithfully served the Lord and her church family, including serving as choir director for many years. Her love of music and worship was a beautiful expression of the faith that remained steadfast throughout her life.

Jean was also a hardworking woman throughout her life. She worked as a textile worker at Opp & Micholas Mills. Later, she and her husband, Buddy, opened Pine Grove Service Station, which became an important part of their lives and the community. Jean faithfully ran the service station for nearly 40 years, where her strong work ethic and familiar presence were known to generations of customers and friends.

At 4:35 on that October morning, her family found comfort in knowing that the faith she had carried throughout her life had become sight as she entered the presence of Jesus.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. “Buddy” Everage; daughter, Clara Folmar; parents, Ollie and Exa Spurlin; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert Cine and Mary Lillian Everage; and siblings, Richard Spurlin, Juanita Antonini, and Dorothy Phillips.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Judy Everage; son-in-law, Ross Folmar; grandchildren, Karen Kelley (Steven), Daren Everage (Kyle), and Russell Folmar (Jennifer); great-grandchildren, Brady Walker, Riley Blackston (Caleb), Carter Grace Kelley, Gabby Kendrick (Bryant), Rylan Folmar, and Taylor Thompson; great-great-grandchild, Preston Ray Blackston; and sister-in-law, Sarah Spurlin.

She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who were blessed to know and love her.

For 95 years, Jean’s life touched generations. She leaves behind much more than a family tree; she leaves a legacy of faith, strength, family, and love.

Perhaps some of the sweetest words she leaves behind are those her family heard from her time and time again:

“I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.”

Her earthly chair may now be empty and her voice may be quiet, but the love she poured into her family will continue through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchild, and the generations still to come.

Her family will miss her beyond words, but they grieve with the assurance that Granny Jean is home. She is whole, reunited with those she loved and missed, and, most importantly, with Jesus.

Until we meet again, Granny, we love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.
