Jacob Ray Nelson, age 57, of Basin, Alabama, passed away the morning of Thursday, October 2, 2025. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Born in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, he was a high school graduate with two years of college. Jacob grew up with strong values of faith, hard work, and love for family. After marrying his loving wife Teresa, he made his home in Basin, Alabama, where together they built a life full of laughter, love, and devotion on their farm full of animals including cows, chickens, dogs, cats, plus so much more .
Jacob proudly served his country in the United States Army for 26 years. His service was marked by courage, loyalty, and sacrifice where he carried that same dedication into every part of his life.
Beyond his military career, Jacob found joy in his daughter's music career. He enjoyed helping her with every step along the way all the while making her dream his dream. Watching her succeed made him so proud of everything she did and accomplished. He was recognized as a world champion BBQ competitor and winner. His skill at the grill was unmatched, and his award-winning BBQ brought people together, leaving behind not only trophies but cherished memories all around wherever he went!
Above all, Jacob will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother and friend. His sense of humor, his big heart, and his unwavering support made him someone who could always be depended on. He was deeply loved and respected by all who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched.
He was survived by his wife, together for 40 years, Teresa Nelson; only child daughter, Alice Nelson; and three brothers, Keith, Eddie, and Joey Nelson.
A celebration of Jacob's life will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, October 11, 2025 from Bethany Baptist Church, 19385 Hwy 52 E, Opp, AL 36467.
Though his time on earth feels far too short, the love, laughter, and strength he gave to his family and friends will last forever.
