William Holland Short, age 86, known to most simply as Holland, passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. Born and raised in Babbie, he spent his entire life rooted in the place that shaped him.

A 1957 graduate of Opp High School, Holland went on to serve in the Alabama National Guard before beginning a 42-year career at Alabama Electric Cooperative. There, he built lifelong friendships and earned the deep respect of his coworkers. After retiring, he devoted himself to what brought him the greatest joy—working the land. Holland was happiest outdoors on Short Farms, tending to his cows, checking fences, and caring for the fields that meant so much to him.

Holland wore many hats throughout his life, but the most important was being a father. You could spot him on a dirt road in his truck with the window down, taking the long way just because he liked it. He could also be found slipping quarters into the drink machine at the fire department or catching up with friends at the farmer's co-op.

He gave more than 30 years of service to the Babbie Volunteer Fire Department, including time as captain and treasurer. His leadership helped bring about the expansion and relocation of the department, resulting in the present-day station with its community center and storm shelter, improvements that will benefit generations to come.

Holland's steady presence, quiet humor, and deep love for his family and community will be remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his children, Chris (Vicky) Short, Dawn Short, and Kelley (Chris) Fore; grandchildren, Jesse Kelley (Alex Piper), Bradley (Amber) Anderson, and Case Short; and great-grandchildren, Kyle, Addison, Amelia, and Emmy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane.

Holland received loving care from Aveanna Hospice and caregivers: Gloria Rogers, LaTisha Rodgers, NieEisha Hamilton, Candice Hamilton, JoAnn Dixon, Leisha Ellison, and Lahoma Mctyere.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, November 28, 2025 in Babbie Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Holland's life. Bro. Carroll Parker will be officiating with Chris Short, Case Short, Bradley Anderson, Chris Fore, Alex Piper and Randy Ray serving as pallbearers. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Babbie Volunteer Fire Department.
