Mr. Herbert Herschel McIntosh, age 77, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2025 in Mizell Memorial Hospital. He was born in Enterprise, Alabama on September 18, 1947 to his late parents, Adine Lee Alford and Herbert Hoover McIntosh. Herschel was a proud and devoted family man. He was a 1965 graduate of Samson High School and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in English and a Master's degree in Psychology from Troy State University.
Herschel served his country for 20 years with dedication and honor. He began his military career in the United States Air Force, serving four years, before enlisting in the United States Army where he served 16 years. Herchel, a Vietnam War veteran, received several honors for his service, including the Army and Air Force Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, the U.S. Army Gold Recruiter Badge with three Sapphire Achievement Stars, along with many other accolades. His service to our nation was a defining part of his life, and he carried it with pride.
Herschel is survived by his beloved wife of 17 years, Kathy Sansom McIntosh; daughter, Gamin Zacharias (Todd); granddaughters, Galyn and Zoe Zacharias; step-daughter, Michele Fowler; step-son, Brandon Pierce; step-granddaughter, Hailey Fowler; step great-grandchildren, Jacob Daniel Talbot and Aubriella Bennett; and good friend, Leroy Devine. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rocky Dewayne Alford. He was a loving and supportive father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family was his pride and joy.
Herschel's legacy is one of service, commitment, and love. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Funeral services for Mr. Herbert Herschel McIntosh will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, April 2, 2025 from Wyatt Funeral Home Chapel with full military honors following in Lowery Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Kit Johnson will be officiating with Leroy Devine, Kenneth Sansom, Tim Bass, Todd Zacharias, Vic Miller and Eddie Mack serving as pallbearers.
