Dorothy Jo
Thompson
September 11, 1943 – December 27, 2025
Dorothy Jo Thompson, 82, passed away on December 27, 2025, following a diagnosis and initial treatment for lung cancer. Dorothy lived a life of humble service for her family and her fellow man. If you stopped by her home for a visit you never left hungry and she often gave you more to take home. Dorothy was born on September 11, 1943, to Kernis Floyd and Lillie Armstead Floyd, both deceased. Dorothy was predeceased by the her husband of 52 years, Joel Cephus "J.C." Thompson, the love of her life. She was also predeceased by her brothers Hayward and Billy Ray Floyd, and her sister Nellie Butts. Her brother, Grady Earl Floyd and sisters, Willie Sherill Barnes, and Julie Condrey, all of whom she dearly loved survive her.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Robert J. Thompson (Tracy) of Prattville and Jack V. Thompson (Regina) of Opp. She leaves two grandchildren, Zack Thompson (Allison) and Lauren Boone (Britton), both who live in Prattville. Dorothy leaves behind four beloved great-grandchildren including Eli Thompson, Lucy Boone, Mason Thompson, and Barrett Boone. Dorothy had a quick and lasting love for people, quickly adopting within her heart Regina's children Matthew Sumblin, who passed away two years ago (Natasha), Haley Sasser (Jason), and grandchildren Colby Sumblin (Sara Kate), Cale Sumblin, Lilli Sumblin, Saban Sasser, and Arden Sasser. Great-granddaughter Mary Jane Sumblin was born into the family two years ago bringing joy and renewed life to all. Dorothy also leaves behind many nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts, and others who she all loved.
Dorothy and J.C. worked together many years at the Opp & Micolas Mills until he retired after 41 years, with her following him a few years later to assist him in his fight with lymphoma and skin cancer. She worked for several years afterward at Doc's where her famous fried cornbread was a buffet favorite still talked about by townspeople. God has a plan for us all, some grandiose and some humble. Dorothy fulfilled God's plan for her through her unending selfless service to others.
