Charles Samuel
Matheny
November 1, 1939 – August 21, 2024
Charles Samuel Matheny, born in Worthington, Kentucky on Nov. 1, 1939, passed away in Opp, Alabama on Aug. 21, 2024.
He was preceded by his parents Harry and Margaret Matheny, and survived by his wife Pansy, children Bruce (Corrie), Marie Sinks (Michael), brother Bud (Marlena), sisters Kay (Doug) and Elizabeth (Francis), grandchildren Hannah, Luke, Courtney, Leslie, Devon, and Amanda, and great-grandchildren Samantha, Tanya, Sofie and Athena.
He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, passion for work, and discovery.
We all enjoyed his love of telling stories, jokes, and anecdotes and sharing the Matheny sense of humor. He had a life-long enjoyment of traveling, eating good food, and drinking good wine.
Working at a reduced pace of 40 hours a week, he was still a full-time computer programmer in the financial industry at the age of 84.
Charles attended the University of Kentucky and graduated with bachelors and master's degrees from Virginia Tech in physics and statistics. There is nothing like having a husband/brother/father that thought primarily (no pun intended) in statistics and mathematics. Conversations quite often centered around the sun trajectory and calculating the distance of the latest meteor shower from the earth.
As an entrepreneur, he was the proprietor of several hi-tech companies throughout his life.
He pursued various aspects of programming, including using robotics in manufacturing automation at Mercedes, IBM, Birmingham Steel, Scotts, Campbells, McDonalds, Michelin (Milan), and the first automated toll booth system for the Kansas turnpike, among others. Several decades before it was popular to delve into, he began developing Artificial Intelligence software and created a Deep Neural Network for stock prediction later in his life.
He traveled the world teaching data processing and worked at the Pentagon on the military budget in the Vietnam era.
He was also an accomplished spy-mystery novel writer and had many interests, such as photography, playing guitar, amateur meteorology, and sailing his 35-foot C&C sailboat in the Chesapeake Bay.
