Burt
Turner
March 18, 1953 – November 23, 2024
Burton Eugene Turner was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on March 18, 1953. He was adopted by loving parents when he was two days old, and lived a happy childhood with his parents and two little sisters in Pampa, Texas.
Like many of us, Burt grew up during the Vietnam War and draft, the struggle of social reform and the birth of civil rights. Perhaps this helped shape his somewhat rebellious, yet smooth and endearing nature. He had a gorgeous tenor voice, and no matter what mischief he found himself in during the week, was always right there at the front of the Church of Christ auditorium every Sunday morning singing the words to every hymn by heart. Burt loved music, friends, books, old drummers and lost causes.
Burt completed his study of HVAC science at San Jacinto College and went on to teach HVAC at the same school. Later he founded a rescue organization in Arizona rescuing, rehabbing, and adopting out over 1200 cats, kittens, and bunnies each year.
In 2010, Burt and April reconnected through the magic of Facebook, and Burt joined the love of his life in Opp, Alabama and gained many new family members and friends.
Burt loved to teach, and most of all he loved to teach the word of God. He had hundreds of sermons and lessons he composed over the years, and is the author of a doctrinal Christian book entitled "With the Understanding Also". As an adopted child to lifelong, loving Christian parents, he completely understands the love of God for His adopted children. Burt was raised "in the way he should go" and has led, preached and taught for most of his life.
Burt was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Joy Turner; brother, Robert Turner; and son, Joshua Turner. He is survived by his wife, April Turner; daughter, Jennifer Houck; son, Zachariah Turner; sisters, Amy Thornton and Donna Hood; and grandsons, Conor Houck and Noah Houck. He is also survived by his bonus family: Lori & Ryan Gwaltney and their daughters, Abbe and Gracen Gwaltney, and Michelle & Billy Smith and their son, Conner Smith.
Although Burt lived in the same world as us, those who knew him had a feeling his feet never quite touched the ground.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, November 26, 2024 from Wyatt Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Trey Poole will be officiating accompanied by eulogist, Zach Turner.
