Obituary

Mrs. Addie Barganier Wise of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, May 19, 2025. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Harold G. Wise, who passed away on Wednesday, October 13, 2010.

In February 1952, Addie and Harold married and they lived in San Diego, California for a short time while he was stationed aboard a navy ship. In 1955, they moved to Ft Walton Beach, Florida, where he was employed by Eglin AFB, and for the next 33 years, they enjoyed the friendship of many other employees and the close relationships that developed, both on the base and in the community.

Addie was born in Opp, Alabama on November 22, 1928 to her late parents, Joseph Hillary Barganier & Delia Danley Barganier. She grew up in Opp, Alabama, and was a 1947 honor graduate of Opp High School. She attended Alabama College in Montevallo, Alabama, where she graduated with honors in 1951 with a major in music education. She taught fourth grade at Opp Elementary School for a year. After moving to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, she taught private piano lessons from 1955-1977. She has followed the careers of many of her students who have become Ph., M.D.s, school principals, band directors, and teachers in many fields. Many of her students have told her that they feel their knowledge and appreciation of music has helped them become well-rounded individuals in their adult lives. She was a member of music professional organizations, the Ft Walton Beach Woman's Club, a member of Cinco Baptist Church, and a primary caregiver to her late husband and mother. Her family was the centerpiece of her life, and the love and close relationship that her family enjoyed over the years provided some of her happiest memories. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, needlework, and crossword puzzles.

Harold was born in Opp, Alabama to his late parents, John Pete Wise and Bernice Tisdale Wise. He graduated from Opp High School in 1946, attended Auburn University on an N.R.O.T.C. Scholarship and received his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a power option in 1950. Upon graduation he was commissioned an Ensign, U.S. Navy and served on active duty from 1950-1953, including two tours of duty aboard naval vessels in the Korean War. After release from active duty he maintained active status as a Naval Reservist until entering the Retired Reserve List in 1973 in the rank of Commander, and was retired from the United States Navy on May 30, 1988. He was employed as a design engineer at CONVAIR/Fort Worth, Texas until 1955. Came to Eglin AFB in 1955 and had assignments over the next 33 years as Chief of Electronic Instrumentation, Chief of Airborne Instrumentation Division, Administrator of Physical Sciences and Assistant Deputy for Engineering. He attended Florida State University, Eglin AFB Graduate Center from 1961 to 1963 and was awarded an MBA degree with a major in R & D management. His contributions and achievements while at Eglin were recognized by unit awards, outstanding performance ratings and upon his retirement on May 31, 1985, he was given the Award for Meritorious Civilian Service.

They are survived by their daughter, Susan W. Hiemstra and husband, John of Valparaiso, Florida; granddaughter, Joanna Whigham and husband, Jared of Opp, Alabama; two great-grandchildren, Kate Whigham and Jake Whigham; his sister, Betty Gunnels of Huntsville, Alabama; and numerous nieces and nephews.
